Plot Summary
The story takes place in the small, tight-knit town of Maybrook, Pennsylvania, which is thrown into chaos and suspicion after a terrifying, inexplicable event.
The plot begins when seventeen children from the same third-grade classroom mysteriously vanish on the same night, at the exact same time (2:17 a.m.). Only one student, Alex, remains.
The film follows the interconnected perspectives of several town residents as they try to solve the mystery and grapple with the rising paranoia:
Justine Gandy (Julia Garner): The children's teacher, who is placed on leave and becomes the focus of the community's suspicion.
Archer Graff (Josh Brolin): A frantic father desperately searching for his missing son, Matthew.
Paul Morgan (Alden Ehrenreich): A troubled beat cop who has a complicated relationship with Justine.
As the narrative unfolds, the characters discover that the children's disappearance is not a simple abduction, but rather tied to a powerful supernatural entity—a woman known as "Aunt Gladys" (Amy Madigan). This entity uses a dark magic ritual to seize control of the adults in town, turning the community's residents into mindless, self-destructive weapons against each other.
The survivors must eventually band together to face a villain who has weaponized the very people they trust, all while trying to uncover the horrifying truth about where the children are being held.
