Plot Summary
The story takes place on the rugged, dragon-plagued island of Berk.
Hiccup (Mason Thames), the inventive, scrawny, and often-overlooked son of the Viking chief, Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler, reprising his voice role from the animation in live-action), struggles to fit into a society dedicated to dragon slaying.
In an attempt to prove himself during a raid, Hiccup manages to wound and capture a highly feared Night Fury dragon. However, when he tracks the dragon down, he finds himself unable to kill the helpless creature. Instead, he compassionately releases it, slowly forming a secret, groundbreaking friendship with the dragon he names Toothless.
This unlikely bond challenges centuries of Viking tradition and reveals the true, peaceful nature of dragons. As an ancient, dangerous threat emerges, the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless becomes the crucial key to forging a new future for both Vikings and dragons, redefining what it means to be a hero and a leader on Berk.
